about

One day I was pondering about all the threats I'd heard from the fire and brimstone preachers in my childhood. Garrison Keillor said rightly they'd scare you so bad about getting hit by a train on the way home and ending up in hell that you'd make a mental note to take a different route home from the service. Then I started pondering the mystery of why things went right--why you didn't get "smited," why blessings came out of nowhere, why the sky didn't fall in...and this song sort of came along. It's one of my favorites that I've written, and I haven't sung it in a while. Think I might do that.

A friend told me he heard this song when he was scraping bottom while he went through a divorce. It makes me glad if a song puts somebody’s hurt into words and lifts them up

lyrics

Sky’s A-Clearing
Gary Furr

Had my head down for a long time
Same thoughts running ‘round in my weary mind
Dead-end road and a heavy load
Weighing down on me
Then one morning without warning
I was free

All the preaching that I listened to
Told me bad news was always fixing to
Come crashing down like an avalanche on my worthless soul
But love surprised me as far as the eye could see
Everything was whole

Chorus
Sky’s a-clearing, the time is nearing
The clouds are breaking up,
my hopes are waking up
The burden’s lifting, life is shifting
And I have the strength to go on

I’ve been counting all my blessings
Finding grace after confessing
All those hands that I once slapped away
Still reaching out to me
And now I hold on like a drowning man in an angry sea.

Chorus

On the one hand, I’m less certain
Of what might be behind the curtain
Easy answers, like a cancer
Leave you looking for a friend.
But on the other, I’ve discovered
A Love that never ends

Chorus
